Distillery Diaries, August 2024: Liqueur

Dear Distillery Diaries,

We make a whole range of delicious alcoholic drinks here at Yarm Distillery, but this month, we want to focus on one in particular. Liqueur (no, not liquor!) is a diverse and delicious branch of our business, and we think it deserves the spotlight.

So, what is the difference between liqueur and liquor? In the USA, the word “liquor” is often used to refer to all types of alcohol collectively (for example, “I’m going to the liquor store to pick up some beer”), but the word technically refers to alcohol that is made from grain and then fermented — vodka, gin, and whisky are all examples of liquor. Liqueur, on the other hand, is a spirit with an additional flavouring from sugar, fruit, or spices and herbs. These drinks are often added to cocktails — like Cointreau or Amaretto — or consumed in small quantities after a meal, such as limoncello or grappa.

Now we have cleared that up, our wonderful Cherry Whisky and Cherry Rum Liqueurs can take centre stage. Both are 29% ABV, giving a delicious kick with rich cherry notes on the nose. We carefully select the finest ripe cherries, allowing us to craft every moment of the tasting experience. These deep, fruity spirits can be enjoyed neat, but shine when mixed with lemonade and served over ice.

We think that our liqueur is the perfect choice for a beer-garden tipple or a summer barbecue toast. No need to take our word for it: our Cherry Rum Liqueur was a finalist in the Best Wine and Spirit category of the Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards. Enjoy your August, everyone — and cheers to liqueur!
